Last night we joined my parents, sisters, their significant others, and the various nieces and nephews for a fun time at the Mass Audubon Moose Hill Halloween Prowl.
I have many years of fond memories of the Prowl, though to be honest this is the first time I’ve ever done it as a paying person in a guided group. Since my mum worked at Moose Hill my childhood, teen years and early adulthood Prowls were from the volunteer perspective keeping luminaries lit, handing out treats to folks at the end, and other such behind the scenes tasks (though since this was somehow my husband’s first Prowl experience, I haven’t been to one in over 5 years, doesn’t seem that long ago!). My father used to be the starting Druid at the fire. My mum held many various roles. My sisters as well sometimes being various animal characters. My gram even used to man the front desk, greeting visitors. We always had a good time at the event.
The Halloween Prowl is a non-scary family friendly guided walk through the woods where you meet various characters who tell you in amusing ways their story. There is always the starting Druid, and the end dancing around the fire, as well as the wall of carved pumpkins, and popcorn and hot chocolate back that the nature center. The other characters though vary each year, this year we met a neat flying squirrel who actually flew through the trees, a singing grasshopper, rapping coy wolves, and a humorous skunk. The grasshopper I think was my favorite, very fun and great singing!
It was a great time, I think the kids all had fun. My 4yr old niece was super excited to show us all the 2 pumpkins she had helped carve on Thursday at the volunteer pumpkin carving day. She did one of a cat and one of a wolf and was very proud of both.
Thanks to all of the woods walking we do every week, Tom was a pro leading me through the woods. He found the slow pace confusing to start, but adjusted pretty quickly once he realized I wasn’t going to be asking him to pass people in our group.
So if you’re ever in the area of Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary at the end of October, I highly recommend tickets to their Halloween Prowl event. Good, safe family fun!
